January 19, 2012 - Co. 17 has Busy Afternoon and
Evening
On
January 19, 2012, Montgomery dispatched Co. 17
for the PIC on Rt. 124 and Glendalough with
possibly people trapped. Units responding were,
Rescue Squad 717, Engine Tanker 717, Ambulance
717, C717 (Sutton), C717D (Baker), and C717E (Chite).
Co. 17 arrived on scene to find a two vehicle
head-on collision with two trapped. C717 assumed
Rt. 124 and Glendalough command. Rescue Squad
717's crew immediately got to work extricating
both patients from each vehicle. After 14
minutes, both patients were extricated from the
vehicles. One patient was transported by land to
Suburban Hospital, while the other patient was
flown by Trooper 3 to Suburban Hospital.
Later that
evening, Montgomery dispatched Brush 717
(Bullard), Engine 717B (Kapp), Tanker 717
(Herbert) and C717D (Baker) to 21601 New
Hampshire Ave. for the car fire. Brush 717
arrived on scene to find a single vehicle on
fire. Immediately, Brush 717's crew extinguished the
fire. The driver of the vehicle was not injured.
After the units returned to the station to clean
up, Montgomery dispatched them to Co. 4's area
(Sandy Spring) to assist with a structure fire.

1, 2012 - Co. 17 Assists on Barn Fire in Howard
County
On
January 1, 2012, at 1300hrs, Rescue Squad 717 &
Engine 713 (Damascus) responded mutual aid to
Howard County for the barn fire on Jennings
Chapel Rd. Lisbon V.F.D. units arrived to find a
100’ by 50’ barn fully involved. Engine Tanker
717, Tanker 717 responded on the 2nd alarm. The
tankers took part in water shuttle operations.
Chief 717 (Sutton) had water supply. Chief 717C
(Burns) and Chief 717D (Baker) also responded.
Numerous units from Howard, Carroll & Frederick
Counties assisted with this fire.

December 17, 2011 - Co. 17 Responds for the
House Fire in Olney
Company
17 responded on the house fire in Olney, Station
40's first due with RS717 (Balser), E717(Kapp),
C717D (Baker). Engine740 arrived on the scene
with fire coming from the rear and from the roof
of the house. Company 17 arrived shortly after
and went to work. The Rescue Squad Crew
performed searches with negative results and
controlled utilities, as well as assisted on the
second floor with opening up so the engine
company's could put the fire out. E717 pulled an
additional handline to the second floor to help
knock the fire. After the fire was out units
picked up and went in service. While units were
on this call the ambulance and tanker crew were
staffed and getting a good nights sleep back at
the station.

December 11, 2011 - Santa makes Surprise Visit
to the Army National Guard
On
Sunday, December 11, 2011, members from the
Laytonsville District Volunteer Fire Department
along with Santa made a surprise visit to the
Army National Guard off of Riggs Rd. Santa was
met by Army Service Men and Women along with
their children. Santa mingled with everyone and
even had a nice holiday lunch with everyone.
Even the members from LDVFD enjoyed mingling
with all the Army personnel.

December 9, 2011 - Santa makes Surprise Visit to
Laytonsville Town Hall
On
Friday, December 9, 2011, Santa made a surprise
visit to Laytonsville Town Hall. First, he made
his stop to the Laytonsville District Volunteer
Fire Department to be briefed on what to expect.
He then got ready and jumped into Brush 717 and
followed Engine 717 up to Town Hall. Once Santa
arrived he was greeted by all the children from
the town of Laytonsville and the surrounding
communities. Santa took his time with each child
and after about 2 hours, had seen over 50
children.

November 19, 2011 - PIC with Rollover on
Damascus Rd.
At
0716 hrs., Co. 17 was dispatched for a PIC with
rollover on Damascus Rd. RS717 (Baker) arrived
on scene to find a single vehicle overturned
with a single patient lying next to the vehicle
possibly ejected. C717B (Richards) arrived on
scene and established Damascus Rd. command.
RS717’s crew along with A717’s crew started
patient care. Once the patient was stable, M713
along with A717’s crew transported patient to
Suburban for further evaluation.

November 19, 2011 - PIC with Entrapment on Rt.
124 and Emory Grove Rd.
On
Saturday November 18, Co 17, was initially
dispatched for an inhalation emergency in Co.
8’s 1st due area. C717D (Baker) and
RS717 (Capt. Chite) were diverted to the PIC
with entrapment on Rt. 124 and Emory Grove Rd.
C717D (Baker) arrived on scene to find a 3 car
collision with one trapped. C717D (Baker)
established Rt. 124 command. RS717's crew
removed 2 doors and the b-post. One child was
transported to Children's Hospital while the
other patients were transported to Suburban and
Shady Grove. Units picked up and cleared the
scene.

November 13, 2011 - Co. 17 Responds on Box 28-15
at Shady Spring Ter.
On
Sunday evening at 1908 hrs, Montgomery
dispatched Co. 17 for the townhouse fire at
17646 Shady Spring Terrace. As Co. 28 arrived on
scene, PE708 confirmed they had heavy fire
showing from the roof of a two story townhouse.
Units responding from Laytonsville were PEW717,
RS717, E717, UT717, C717D (Baker), C717
(Sutton). Due to the extent of the fire,
additional units were requested on the RID and
2nd alarm. Firefighters were unable to make
entry into the home initially as there was
concern the roof was going to collapse. Once the
fire was brought under control, firefighters
were able to enter and go through all the debris
on the second and first floor. No one was home
when the fire started and no one was injured.
The cause of the fire is currently under
investigation.

October 15, 2011 - Laytonsville District
Volunteer Fire Dept. Open House
On
Saturday, the Laytonsville District Volunteer
Fire Department held their annual open house.
This years theme was "Protect Your Family from
Fire." There were many exhibits and
demonstrations on how to protect your family
from fire. There were appearances from the Park
Police, SWAT, K9, Kensingtons Truck 705 and
Gaithersburg's Fire Safety House. A special
thanks goes to Juliet Bartsch for putting
together such a successful event.

3, 2011 - Co. 17 Assists with a Church Fire in
Mt. Airy
Severe
thunderstorms rolled through the area in the
early morning hours of Sunday July 3rd, bringing
several working incidents in company 15's first
due. Box 15-20 was dispatched for the church on
fire in the 5100 block of Woodville Road.
Company 17 units were dispatched to assist with
the church fire. Units arrived on scene with
fire showing from the roof. Units operated for
several hours extinguishing the fire and all
units cleared by 0800 hours.

28, 2011 - Co. 17 Assists with House Fire in
13's First Due
At
1700 hours, Company 17 was dispatched for a
house fire in Company 13's area. Rescue Squad
717 arrived just after Engine 713 to find a two
story home with smoke showing. Fire was found on
all three floors of the home. Canteen 717 was
dispatched to assist. After an hour of fighting
the fire, it was declared out. Units were held
for several hours on this hot day to make sure
all hot spots were completely out. Chief 717B
(Richards) and Chief 717D (Baker) were also on
the call.

18, 2011 - Co. 17 Responds for a PIC on Rt. 108
and Griffith Rd.
At
1530 hours, Company 17 and Medic 708 were
dispatched for a collision with a report of one
pinned. Units arrived on scene to find two
vehicles involved. Rescue Squad 717 had to
remove a door to get one of the patients out.
Ambulance 717 transported one trauma patient to
Suburban Hospital. Medic 708 transported a child
with minor injuries to Montgomery General
Hospital.

13, 2011 - Co. 17 Assists with House Fire in
28's First Due
Company
17 was dispatched for a house fire in Company
28's area. Engine 728 arrived on seen to find a
rear deck on fire with extension into the house.
Chief 717D (Baker) arrived on scene and
established command. Engine 717 was dispatched
for the rapid intervention and Rescue Squad
717's crew performed a search of the house.

June 5, 2011 - Co. 17 Responds on Box 28-11 at
8222 Mountain Ash Way
On
Sunday, June 5th, Box 28-11 was dispatched for a
house fire at 8222 Mountain Ash Way. Engine 717
(Browning), Rescue Squad 717 (Gaskell), Chief
717 (Sutton), and Chief 717D (Baker) responded
on the box alarm. Units arrived on the scene to
find a two-story, single family home with smoke
showing from the rear. Engine 717 was assigned
to the RID, Rescue Squad 717 was assigned to
search group and to check for extension. Chief
717 was assigned to be the scene Safety Officer.
Canteen 717 was on the scene serving cold drinks
and snacks. Investigation group found the fire
was started by an unattended gas grill.
